The jump to digital platforms and digital frameworks is one fraught with risks. As such, it should not be taken lightly, which is not to say go hire the most expensive consultant or IT service providers. Quite the contrary, to attain professional level digital systems in business whether public or private, the move should be made incrementally with consultation and services with the appropriate professional or professionals. There is no quick conglomerating way in the form of an all-encompassing label or a giant IT department; there is no instant transformation or innovative spurt that could unfold within a day. It is the same as any get slim now scheme or get rich quick scam - there is just no instant way without the incremental cross-relation of set establishment in its peoples and the right level of equipment and services. The former changes only slightly, despite what magazines and newspaper ads espouse, while the latter is adjusted. With a small budget to begin with, the right services might be out of the box or in some cases where the establishment knows itself well hand crafted. Only in the utility do the meanings and the requirements begin to take form in consciousness across the staff and "workers" (ie. those who do the work). With good books or accounting through general usage and cross staff discussions ongoing those requirements for the next upgrade perhaps more expensive, perhaps merely adjusted, will begin to emerge. This may be a conservative view, but suffice to say, it should always work. It is not out of the question that some miracle solution could be bought at the right price, but deep analysis that resounds right with the standing staff and established decision makers would need explicated and articulated, and the right expertise whether in house or through consulting (hard to find) should find if the analysis is correct or not. Every miracle solution has some down side unforeseeable, so such is too a risk. The primary risks addressed above, however, concern the leap. Nobody makes a leap without seeing the other side, and certainly, nobody makes the leap who is not certain from deep knowledge one's capacity for making that leap. Making the leap to embrace digital platforms for business affairs (affairs that keep us busy in their worldly ways) is much the same. Nobody embraces another in the first moment with some deep love that was not already there, and love as always is built on mutual knowledge that develops into trust. And one must always watch for that third or however many bird that makes a quanta leap into the foray. The enterprise as it stands was built this way in this history by these people who had established with their years and expertise. Let us not forget that in the move to take on another dimension, that of the digital.
An article in HBR on moving for inclusion of digital recently takes a more optimistic view - I suppose there is something to be said about operative assets. Why all would be taken on and utilized in their entirety, however, could be compared to piling everything at a banquet onto one's plate.
